One way through which we help our children to acquire social skills is by allowing them to participate in holiday youth camps that are always conducted by SoLife. In the current situation, many parents are always busy and they spend long hours at their workplaces. They leave home very early in the morning and go back home late in evening. The holiday makers stay at home with the maids and some maids are not responsible enough to provide proper guidance to the children. By the time the parent realizes that something wrong has been going on with the child, it may be too late to reverse it. That is why young people need to have social skills so that they can manage their lives responsibly even when their parents are not at home.
Usually, the camps take about three weeks during the third term’s holiday and students from various schools come together and participate in several activities that help them to develop interpersonal skills, leadership skills, goal setting skills, organizational skills, communication skills, decision making and building self-esteem. These are skills that our young people should develop in order for them to become responsible citizens who attach a lot of value to themselves and are mindful of the things that are detrimental to their lives.
Our School outreaches and sensitization project aims at equipping students in main stream primary and secondary schools with intellectual and practical skills. The project is implemented through vocational clubs established in schools. The students will then be trained in selected soft and hands on skills. Competitions are held where the best vocational club and school will be rewarded. This acts as a motivation to other students hence promotion of vocational education. The projects equip the students with both hands on and soft skills, create awareness of the relevance and importance of vocational skills and vocational education. In addition the students will also be guided and informed of the different and relevant career choices available to them. This will guide them in choosing a career path that is relevant and fruitful after education and in the long run this will help mitigate the youth unemployment problem
